General information

Four-cylinder inverted in-line piston engine, delivering 120-145 hp in its various versions, designed in 1932 by Frank B. Halford for De Havilland under the name Gipsy Major. It was built under licence in Italy by Alfa Romeo.

The original version was produced in Great Britain from 1932 in 14,615 units, installed on trainers and touring aircraft, chiefly the De Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth (about 8,900 built, including Giancarlo Zanardo's I-GATO) and the DHC-1 Chipmunk (1,300).

From 1936 it was series-built under licence in Italy by Alfa Romeo as the Alfa 110, also in the improved Bis (1938) and Ter (1948) versions, for a total of several hundred units. The differences from the original British production include aluminium instead of bronze cylinder heads and Italian accessories.

The Alfa 110 was installed on series-production aircraft such as the Saiman 202M, CANSA C.5 and SAI Ambrosini 1001 Grifo, plus numerous prototypes.
